So I just got a phone call from a friend who is taking in an 8 week old APBT puppy tomorrow. She already has her hands full with her dogs so I figure I will end up with this little guy until a home is found for him.Since he is an APBT I can have him neutered through the grant program I got Samson's done with.
I do not plan on keeping him, but def want him neutered before going to a new home. I was wondering at what age is the best for neutering?

Usually any pup over the age of 8 weeks can be altered. It might also depend on the vet. And can usually reach puberty at around 6 months. I think a nice round age is about 4 months unless you find a home for him sooner, then do it when you feel its appropriate.

Kia - if this was a dog that you were planning to keep, then I would suggest waiting until 2 if at all possible - as we know s/n early can/does affect longevity, bone developement and even temperament - BUT we also know that the best way to eliminate the possibility of unwanted, unplanned pregnancies in the pet population, is to s/n before placing them. When weighing all the facts - especially with a breed as popular as pitbulls are - I think you can have this little guy neutered at anytime.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm not 100% I will be getting him but even if she keeps him (until placed) I'd still like her to have him neutered, especially since its free.

So my friend did get the APBT puppy and she said he isn't 8 week sold. More like 4-6 months old. I am filling out the application Monday when i get pictures to send with it for his neutering.

Vets aren't the best when your into using Nature for Your Dog in a Positive Manner!!! Nature states that 20 to 24 months gives dogs the chance to reach maturity naturally. In my life time with raising dogs and watching pups grow into adults and witness dogs who in my opinion were altered early I believe that early altering is NOT in the best interest of a dogs physical & mental developement! I use to work at a Vet clinic and agree with you Von, vets are not always the best in this area. But owners need to educate themselves before going to the vets so at least they can be armed with the knowledge to make an educated decision. I will wait to neuter until it needs to be done.
