This was posted from the DPCA official list with permission to cross post.
Even when we pull out of the Middle East, MILITARY DOGS WILL STILL BE DEPLOYED worldwide and they likely always will be. Translation: There will always be something they need to make life safer or a bit more comfortable for them while they serve and defend this country.
Currently, Troops Direct is working towards making sure every military dog is equipped with thermal crate covers and custom blankets to wear throughout the night in the extreme Middle Eastern conditions. The first shipment for nine dogs was so successful.. .orders for more grew quickly. Aaron told me they're now looking at getting about 130 more blankets/crate covers to dogs deployed in Afganistan and he expects as word spreads, those numbers will increase substantially.
The thermal kennel cover and blanket for the individual dog(s) costs about $25 per unit. I think most people can afford to give one blanket/crate cover - and if they know the need exists and how it benefits those special dogs...they' ll do it with pride and honor.
I asked about Dobermans and Aaron said he didn't know if that breed was being used to detect roadside IED attacks - he thought they might be more of a 'security' force. The military dogs doing the bomb work are mostly Labs at this time. I say...in their hearts, THEY'RE DOBERMANS and our hearts have room to support them ~~ because if we don't, who will?
I spoke openly with Aaron about DPCA. I told him this breed is constantly fighting a less than stellar public perception of them - despite having saved many a life both in war and peace. I reminded him that Dobermans were in the Pacific and helped us defeat the enemy in such hollowed places as Guam and Guadacanal - often times making the supreme sacrifice... giving the "last full measure of devotion" willingly. I asked if DPCA donated, could we expect good publicity in return from Troops Direct? The answer was DEFINITELY.
I asked about "corporate sponsorship" (see their website: www.troopsdirect. com) for The Doberman Pinscher Club of America - indicating to him that if we were recognized in that way, besides the 'warm fuzzies' we'd enjoy because we helped support the dogs in military service, DPCA would also enjoy POSITIVE PRESS worldwide. Aaron understood that immediately and indicated if DPCA wanted to be a corporate sponsor, he was all for it. Corporate sponsorship isn't about making guarantees to Troops Direct - it's more about being called if they need something and IF WE CAN HELP, we do. We don't have to sign in blood or promise more than we are willing or able to give in order to be linked to their public website as corporate sponsors.
Troops Direct accepts credit cards and I believe, PayPal donations through www.troopsdirect. com. Aaron says in the next few weeks, they plan to establish a "Canine Corp" expressly for the purpose of accepting donations for the dogs ONLY. At this time, if you want to support JUST THE DOGS and their needs, you do that by so indicating in a separate email to the organization with your donation.
The next shipment of kennel covers and dog blankets is scheduled to go out on December 15. Between now and then, we could do a lot of good for the dogs who will benefit from that equipment, the DPCA and Dobermans. Any effort we make that sheds a positive light on our dogs - with the public - is well worth our consideration. That dozens of four legged HEROES will be warmer and safer because of us - no matter which breed they may be...is truly frosting on the cake.
I hope the DPCA will give serious thought to these ideas....make contact with Aaron Negherborn if you have other questions or concerns.... become a "corporate sponsor" of the program and encourage club members to make a donation in support of our troops - both human and canine.
This would be an awesome "project" for DPCA as a whole - but if that isn't possible, perhaps we can make individual donations, signing our names as DPCA members for those who are and "Doberman owner" for those who aren't.
