susan,
I do give select pups time without the cone of shame - especially if you have the back nails dremmelled smooth so their little toe nails cannot hook and pull any of the stitches. Especially in hot weather, if supervised you can give them a break
I must say - that I totally agree with you on the post care - I hate the neosporin and rubbing scabs off and waiting for the edges to heal!

Gail, whenever we are directly supervising him we leave the cone off, we never had to use the cone with Leia, but Ranger really likes to dig at the ears and even though all the pups had their nails trimmed to nothing when they were cropped he still manages to paw them up pretty good, we also had his tail redone so we can't let him get his teeth into there to yank out the stitches, even with the cone on the little devil has gotten the tail bandage off several times.

Gorgeous pup by the way We got this from a book recommended here-The World of Doberman Pinschers. His ears still need a little bit of healing and scab removal, so when the stays come off we will be ready to post. To us it is much easier than the old tape method, plus the ears will be standing longer so hopefully the posting period will be shorter.
