I thought that some of you may like to see a puppy being born - I was surprised that when I annonced the first summer that many had never seen a puppy being born so with this latest whelping I decided to video one of the births. Bitches have a Y shaped uterus. The pups are encased in a see through membrane called the amnion and this floats in water in the Placenta that is attached to the wall in the uterine horns. The placenta will detach from the utering wall and the contractions will force the amnion bubble out of the placenta and through the birth canal - on the video you will see the amnion bubble with a lttile foot - this looks cute to you, but I can tell its a hind foot cause I also see a tail - and breech births can be problematic that puppy is alive and fine as long as that bubble does not break as soon as the bubble breaks you need to get the puppy out ASAP so he can breath and not aspirate any fluid. I am telling her to wait and discouraging her from licking the bubble because I don't want her licking to break the bubble. here is a photo of the puppy just born I have removed the amnion membrane - but the umbilical cord is still attached to the placenta that is still inside the birth canal and here is the puppy with the placenta expelled too

awww such a sweet little puppy and what a mom! thanks for sharing that little miracle with us. I have been through kittens being born, and it always amazes me just how our pets can go through all of that, I know how bad having one can be, I cannot imagine having any more than that!
