I give my Josh probiotics and metamucil daily to keep his bowel in top form. He gets two teaspoons of metamucil a day sprinkled on his food along with a package of fortiflora. It's really made a difference for him as far as keeping him regular and clearing up soft stool and diarrhea. I encourage everyone to include some probiotics in their dogs diet. Yogurt is fine, but the concentrations of the correct strains of bacteria are not really high enough. Also, digestive enzymes are important if your dog is gassy (bloat). Don't give water to your Dobe before or after eating, this is also very important in preventing digestive problems.

Yes, probiotics are important. Check out the thread in Diet & Nutrition, Topic: Tummy Issues. This is the product that I use.

I give Paige Prozyme for her bad breath. I have had the vet check it out and everything came out fine, just said she has bad breath. I looked into it further and realized the food in her stomach is not being broken down well enough with digestive enzymes that the smell comes back up through her mouth, yuck. I've read that during the cooking process, the enzymes in the kibble end up being cooked out. I've been adding 1/4 tsp once a day for 4 months now and have definitely noticed a difference. Don't think I'm ever going back. www.prozymeproducts.com/Products.aspxI have given Java probiotics after surgery and while she was on antibiotics to help replenish the good antibodies. I keep probiotics on hand in the closet during any times they may have an upset stomach.

Meat bones and organs have all probiotics/enzymes dogs need. My dogs don't like fish. So I add fish oil and kelp to their food. They are getting Nzymes probiotics. I am going to stop it soon. Yogurt may not be good enough. We use homemade kefir. It works like a charm if any family member has digestive problems.
I don't remember when my dogs had upset stomach and they never been gassy.

Great and very relevant point and issue... raw food has the enzymes that we need to function properly, quite literally without enzymes there is no 'life'. Since we as humans started eating processed foods, we have gotten fatter and fatter and more and more diseased... so are our dogs. Raw foods are the answer to what ails ya.. and your dog too. for dogs raw food is carnivore 'chow'... meat.. fish, eggs, organs etc... for people its omnivore 'chow'= cultured foods, fresh veggies, fruits, sprouted grains, grains that are processed minimally or not at all, and flesh/meat but we cook our meat just enough to give it taste. if only more people would realize and make this a reality for themselves and their pets the world would be a healthier place.
