I have seen a reference to a member self-proclaimed as the [glow=red,2,300]Nail Police[/glow]! So, let's talk! Other than keeping the nails short enough not to come into contact with the ground when standing or walking, are their reasons to keep them shorter than that? I really am asking out of ignorance. I try to keep after nails, but I know I could do a better job. If there are functional reasons, please let me know. If it is conformation requirements for the show ring, that's fine, too. But, I will take that with a grain of salt and not worry as much. The show ring is not my interest. Thanks for any feedback here. Bring on the Nail Police!

I know Tina will have more/better answers for you, as our resident Nail Police. But here goes. One of the other reasons to keeping them short is their foot looks nicer with short nails but also if too long it can alter the way their feet sit and could lead to toe/foot injuries. Like I said, Tina/Hexe/Nail Police will chime in with other reasons too.

dogliness.blogspot.com/2006/06/importance-of-trimming-dogs-nails.htmlI am not the nail police. But before I moved, I would sit on my neighbors st.bernards and clip their nails. If I wouldn't she would literally let them grow until they couldn't walk. The dewclaws literally were a circle when I first met them. Since I seen that, I do a good job of nails and my friends dogs too. You would be amazed at how many people are actually scared of cutting nails. =X

The length can be important if the nails grow into the toe to the right or left. That will cause some obvious problems. As to a long length from negalect that will cause whats known as "splayed feet" again the toes opened because off the weight pushing down on them. As the toes widen the pasterns will also recline. Nail maintance is a very important weekly grooming date its not a cosmetic endeavor at all its a health issue that if totally neglected can cripple the dog and disfigure bones. I use a clipper then a dremmel and I don't go back as far as a show trim, I prefer a length that doesn't scratch the pavement to heavily. The nails are a big part of the dogs grip so if their to short their only grabbing with their toes, its not a big deal for everyone out there its an old PP trainers thought hahaha!! Von
the nail Police?................................that would be Tina!!!

EMMMMM YEAH here , Tina speaking LOL Ok John there is nothing more then everybody else said already. Its not only because of the looks, nope its really imporatant to keep them short, since it makes a difference how the feet are looking and you want more the cat like feet and not flat feet. If the nails are to long it will change the foot. I only use the dremmel on the Dobes, never the clipper. I do them in the beginning every other day, til i'm at the lengh i prefer and then dremmel maybe once or twice a week, its up too, how fast the nails been growing.

Von Thank for all the replies! Von, I really like your practical criteria. I use only a dremmel. My dogs don't mind the trimming process and gets LOTS of praise at the conclusion. But, I have not been trimming often enough. I have met folks that are satisfied only with a show trim, nails that are really nubs. I was hoping folks here would confirm that that is not necessary.
