Folks I have said this til I am blind - Dog in public areas must be leashed - it is the law by the way. Who would think a lab would do this??? Who would foolishly take the chance regardless of the breed and allow their dog to run loose - THE IRRESPONSIBLE who are costing us all our dogs.

Irresponsible owners deserve tougher laws

About a month ago, I took my two medium-sized dogs to Chrysler Beach in Marysville to the river walk. As we were getting out of the car, a couple allowed their two large black Labs loose on the beach without leashes. The dogs ran directly at us, and one attacked my 9-year-old beagle, which laid down in submission.
The attack was so vicious that the beagle was rushed into emergency surgery for deep abdominal wounds. The attack stopped when I struck the dog on his hind-quarter and grabbed for his collar. At that point the owner grabbed the dog.
Who is at fault -- the dogs or their irresponsible owners? The owners allowed their aggressive dogs to run unleashed.
This middle-aged couple never apologized. They never asked if I or my dog were injured even though my dog was screaming in fear and pain. They quickly leashed their dogs and walked off leaving me to assess my dog's injuries.
The veterinarian said if it wasn't for some extra fat around my dog's belly that kept the bite punctures from being a fraction of an inch deeper, it would have died. The vet bills are more than $500 and counting. The point is almost any breed of dog is dangerous in the care of irresponsible owners.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed dog bites and fatalities and concluded that with only an average 16 fatal dog bites a year in the United States, there is not enough data to make conclusions about which breeds are likely to bite and kill.
The CDC suggested irresponsible dog owners should be the target of any safety legislation. I agree.
