I know that a pup should not be forced to run because of growth plates and such. My question here is, if Jax (4.5 months) is running behind Jewel (19 months), would that be the same as "forced running"? When Jewel takes off to run in the field I bring her to (and now Jax for the first time) he is in hot pursuit relentlessly trying to keep up. I reeled Jax in not sure if this could harm him. Any thoughts??

If the pup wants to run let him. He will quit when he gets tired. I don't see any harm here.

We spoke about this last night in Chat (yaayyyyy it's back) with Gunslinger (I always picture Stephen King's Gunslinger series book cover-lol) and as it turn out they run around for an hour or two at a time. I had assumed it was a run after his sister for a few minutes not an hour or more. So I am amending my answer with specifications. Yes, it is still ok for young pups to run but should be kept to 20-30 minutes. If this large burst of energy is a daily ritual, 3 meals a day should be given to compensate for the energy and resources used during this extensive physical output. Obviously, kept calm at least 1/2 hour before eating and the same after to avoid bloat. Oh, and Gunny, we would like some pics of this please.

Most of i agree with what Sandy said, but i think if the pup is playing with his sister and is running around, let them, it burns of the energy, i always let them play and run at their own. Never stop them, they will lay down when they are tired. Training thats a different storie or if i play Fetch with Aesa on the field, then i make the decision when its over

Thanks guys for all the advice. I really do appreciate it. Just to clarify, These arn't backyard romps. This is a place I like to bring them just for them to run and be dogs for a while. Lots of smells, rabbits, deer, possums, coons, and there are a couple of ponds that they can swim in to cool down (I bring fresh water just incase they didn't drink enough pond water...lol). So as far as Jax is concerned, I'll reel him in every 20, 30 mins or so and let him chill and bring something to refuel him (didn't think about that). Shadowlands- "Oh, and Gunny, we would like some pics of this please" I'll post some pics that I have of the devious duo and when I get some new ones I'll be shure to share. I'll do my best with action shots but I usually end up with southern end of the action...LOL Thanks again Gunny

I tend to think that at each age they 'self regulate".... they will do stupid things and we have to police and protect them from jumping OFF of high things and jumping down from things, but running along 'siblings' is kind of a self regulating thing. They will have enough energy to try to keep up, but they simply wont be able to... so they kinda poop out on their own. Taking a 2-3 mile HIKE with a 4 month old puppy would be forcing.. but taking them a place to romp and play and let them 'self regulate' is perfectly ok... just do not take them on a jog or a romp next to your bike, or on a long hike that requires that they keep up with you or an older dog... but it sounds like you are NOT doing any of that... so they should be just fine!

I agree with what everyone else has said.
Running is good for a pup. I think the exercise people are warning about with puppies is like forced, strenuous training, etc.
And like someone else mentioned most pups are self regulating and will stop when they've had enough.
