am so excited about this seminar - it is only 1 hour from me and I plan on attending - taking notes and then reporting back- I have placed this under BSL, because all the new breeder (not only breed) restrictive legislation that affects breeders will have a trickle down effect on the pure bred dogs that will be AVAILABLE for breed fanciers to purchase and enjoy. Anyone in VA that is close enough to go - please let me know and maybe we can meet up and sit together.
++please forward++
WHAT: ARE BREEDERS IN THE CROSSHAIRS?
40th Anniversary VFDCB Annual Seminar
WHERE: Doubletree Hotel, Charlottesville, VA
WHEN: July 23, 2011 from 9:30 AM till 3:00 pm
HOW MUCH: Thanks to our generous underwriters, preregistration is only $25, and $30 at the door. Space is limited, so we recommend registering TODAY!
Breeders across the nation feel threatened. Every day we hear of dogs seized, restrictive laws passed, or people charged with "cruelty" when the news reports show healthy animals. Animal rights extremists want all breeding stopped and their anti-breeder sentiment seems to be spreading. Join us in Charlottesville, VA July 23 for an inside look at what is going on and how breeders can protect themselves and retain their rights.
SPEAKERS
Jennifer Clark, Government Relations Administrator, AKC Jennifer oversees much of the Government Relations department’s PAC activities, as well as department communications and many other projects. She came to AKC two years ago from Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked for six years as a lobbyist.
Prior to joining AKC, she was the legislative analyst for the Center for Arizona Policy. Jennifer was also associate lobbyist for the Aarons Company, a Phoenix- based public policy firm, Her resume includes a variety of other positions ranging from an internship in a U.S. Senator’s office in Washington, D.C., to planetarium show demonstrator at her hometown’s science museum in Columbus, Ohio. Jennifer graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Messiah College in Grantham, PA, and also studied at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Kevin Kilgore, Chief of Animal Control, Hanover, VA
Kevin has been Hanover’s Chief of Animal Control since December 1992. During that time, he has restructured the department and helped implement industry-based standard procedures. Career development programs have been established for animal care and control officers and a number of community outreach efforts have been undertaken, including rabies vaccination clinics and dog licensing programs. He recently completed a three year term as president of the Virginia Animal Control Association. He will talk to us about problems breeders run into, how animal control gets involved, what happens when they do, and how to avoid problems with your local ACO.
Attorney Tate LoveTate Love, a native of Waynesboro, joined Staunton's Black, Noland, and Read law firm in 2001 following his graduation from the William & Mary School of Law. He specializes in criminal and traffic defense, insurance defense and personal injury litigation. He has successfully represented clients before general district courts, circuit courts and the Supreme Court of Virginia. Tate is handling the appeal for Jean Cyhanick, who was convicted of animal cruelty in December on the basis of seven of her dogs having dental disease. This is one of the very few cases against breeders in this country which has gone to appeal. Tate will talk about your legal rights, what to do if animal control comes, and the situations encountered if your case goes to court .
Gails NOTE: This is a pivotal case - this lady was accused of, tried and found guilty here in VA of Animal Cruetly because of her small dogs having bad teeth. - this is a very dangerous precident - and I am glad that she is appealing the courts decisions
There was severe abuse or "interpretation" of the cruelty to animal laws to convict this lady - her dogs were all under a vets care and it was her vet's recommendation that no surgery be done to address the dental disease.
