I am sure this question has been asked many times HOWEVER what causes an adult dog to "suck on pillows and or his blankey"??My newest addition (2 1/2 yrs old) "loves" his blankey and actually pulls it through the house only to lay down wherever I may be and SUCK, eyes closed and very preoccupied. So far he has not put the traditional "swiss cheese holes on his blanket. His previous owner had issues with that! I will say that I prefer he utilize his blankey over MY pillows although the other day I came home and he had one of the down bed pillows on the floor, yes with a hole in it and feathers plastered to his face. And a VERY innocent LOOK! I do have to admit it was comical but after an appropriate scolding he has chosen A blanket! I really think he should have been named LINUS! Question is what causes this? He was sold at an appropriate age and not to early! Also have had 2 dogs that have done this with similar breeding. Genetics? or is it similar to the "high" that a horse acquires when CRIBBING??

I have found that certain lines tend to do the sucking. Whether it is genetic or a learned behaviour, especially if the dam is the one that does the sucking, I can't say. It could be a bit of both.

My boy sucks blankets too and he wasn't removed from the litter too early. I've read quite a few coversations on sucking, and the general consensus is that the dobes that suck just find it to be comforting and relaxing

Thank you for the input. I have heard so many different reasons, some make sense others are just ridiculous. He is sucking his blanket as we speak. I would prefer he use his blanket than my pillows so just another thing one has to learn to live with. By the way, Tina, I have been dutifully trimming nails but it is a long progress. He tried to kill the dremel yesterday but all it did was buzz his lips. LOL...

Their specific lines that are shredders and suckers and the ones that I've come across I redirect onto more positive objects like a kong with treats or a raw knuckle bone, some dogs do develop an obsession toward these objects and to me its not a healthy habit. I've never seen a dog do these things that wasn't crated or kenneled at night! My current dog has a "problem" with pillows!!! he likes to rearrainge them throughout the house. Bed pillows wind up on the couch and vice versa!! He has a knack for house decorating, decent taste too! Then when I don't realize I need one he brings one to me he's a good boy!! Von&Pudg

My boy is a flank sucker....he seems to do it if he is feeling stressed or bored. Therefore I try to keep him from being bored or stressed

Zoey is a blanket sucker (a female Linus lol) she'll drag hers every where too and lay on it while she is sucking.
