Training should be done as a pup with just short sessions. It can even fit into commercials. 10-15 minutes, several times a day (whenever you can fit it in). I also suggest looking for a local trainer with dobe experience to help you. So a couple of months before the pup gets there, contact a few and ask to sit in on a class. If they say no then you don't want them as a trainer. Check out their methods. In my opinion, if you are looking at wanting him to be a good family dog and not work him, then positive reinforcement is the way to start. Your trainer can help you (as can we) during the juvenile period and what methods are ideal for your deaf teenager. Lol!! You reallly want to stay away from those that insist of having prongs while they are still babies or those that use choker collars and do a lot of hard leash corrections. As young pups, positive reinforcement does bring alot out of them. You don't have to use treats, you can use toys as a reward and it works wonders. Don't fret, as it will be a bit of a balancing act when the pup first gets there but you will find yourself soon setting a sort of schedule. I would also start educating the kids about 6 months before the pup comes home. If you can get stuffed animals that look like dobes you can use them. Teach them how to pet and what to do if the pup jumps up. Little ones tend to scream and run which only entices the pup to chase. Teach them about the ears especially since they will have to be posted., and no pulling on the tails etc. With having two babes in the house, I would have the pup get used to you sticking your hand in his bowl while eating and touching his mouth. If you do this often, there should be no reaction should one of the kids do it as he will not see it as someone stealing his food. Enough for now or you will be freaking out by the time the pup does arrive! Lol!

Shadowlands, thanks for that it did bring me a sigh of relief. My kids a;ready have two kitties so they know that there is absolutely no pulling or poking ect. to any animal. I am very very strict about that mainly because it is mean and these animals are a part of our family but also because that is a good way to get bite. I have to remind them of these things sometimes but I am on top of it all the time. Again, thanks for your advice I am sure that I will be asking for more of it. Amy

Amy, you are a gem. Far too many people don't think about asking questions until after they have already brought the pup home. It is great to see that you are getting all your ducks in a row ahead of time. This speaks volumes about what type of home this young pup will be going to. As for questions, ask away....that is what we are here for and every single one of us can talk all day about our dogs and quite frankly, dogs in general.

If you start your pup with NILF right away it should help with OB classes. NILF means Nothing in Life is Free. Make the pup earn everything. For example make him sit before he gets his meal, make him sit before opening the door for him to go out, make him sit before he gets his toy and so on. You can ask him to do other things besides sit...but sit is an easy task to start with

Breesmom, thanks I plan on doing all of that. Hey if my kids have to say thanks and please then in a sense so should the puppy after all isn't sitting like saying ok "please may I" That is how I think of it. I am super excited but nervous all at the same time. I was a vet assistant/tech for at least 7 years so I am applying for jobs at some clinics here in Vegas hoping one will pick me up. Jobs are sparse in this economy so I figured lets go with something I already know how to do although, my animals never like it when I work at a vet clinic . But again, thanks for all the answers. I guess over the years of working in the animal industry I have see too many owners not do enough research and get an animal that they can not handle or afford and that is tragic. I want to make sure that I do all I can before the baby comes home . Amy

Tina, I have been to Bakersfield as a kid playing soccer. Yeah, I am in Vegas that is for sure and not real sure yet if I like it or not. It seems that no matter who I meet no one likes it here. No one ever has anything nice to say about this place. We will see how I feel as time progresses. Right now I am looking for work and wow it is difficult so wish me luck. Amy

Von, I have not yet visited with the breeder. I am waiting till today or tomorrow to call her. She was on vacation over the weekend and asked for the first part of the week to get caught up so I am going to either call or email. I will let you know.

OK, remember that your interest in a dog that can protect has everything to do with the breeders choices of temperaments & quality of character in their breedings. Theres plenty of breeders in the states that get paniced when customers ask about their dogs ability to work. They think its a situation were their pups are chained in the yard and fed food that Dede cooked to make them mean and more importantly ........hungry!!! (this is an inside joke dear) Just ask the breeders if they feel their dogs are protective and if any have been trained in protection work for their families and home. Let me know! Von

Thanks Von, I called her today and she said she had a surprise visit from some family from out of town. She said to call her early next week so we will see. She only has one Dobermann at the residence anyhow. I am not real sure what I will be able to determine from just one dog but I will at least be able to meet her and talk that should be good for now.
