Which is why I do use this preventative since I live in an area which has plenty of mosquitos which equals plenty of opportunitites to contract this disease.

Sandy - not to take this off topic - but I guess I assumed Canada would be too cold for Mosquitos - I do realize there is tons of lakes and waterways in Canada - but just did not realize it would get warm enough for them to LIVE there lol

OMG!! Yes we have mosquitos and they can be hellish!! Some summers, like other places, are worse than others of course, but yes we get those buggers here. I wish we had customs turn them away at the border, but somehow I don't think they stop to declare anything.

Have been reading up on Heartguard and found that the AVMA states that 65% of adverse drug reactions and 48% of all reported deaths resulting from drug reactions are caused by heartworm preventatives. Also read that monthly prevention is over doing it that once every three months is enough as the Heartguard is not really a preventative but kills off the larvae. Are we over doing it with this med just like we are finding out we are doing with the vaccinations??

i don't give mine no heartworm medication at all. We arent living in a mosiquito area, so i see no reason in it. This year i didn't even sed the frontline at all, no ticks hereeither or not much and my never have worms or something else, never had fleas either. So i just don't give it to them.

I give my dogs Sentinel.
I live in Florida where it's a year-round problem. In Florida, if you don't give your dog heartworm medication, your dog WILL get heartworm. Period. The dogs are still tested every year. Treatment for heartworm is very expensive and very hard on the dog.
