Terry,
'Pattern Training' is when you always train obedience in the same order and the same way it will be done for the trial. You know, so many paces up the middle, so many paces then turn, so many paces fast then slow...and so on. Just in case you did not know, Dobermanns know how to count...LOL
I made that mistake with my first SchH (IPO) dog. Now we never train any pattern - just mix it all up - even for the CD.
Obedience is Obedience.....

That's good cause I DO NOT do that. I train OB anywhere and everywhere, the mall, parks, the feed store, places with distraction. I use the commands but there's no pattern. The way I see it, if he knows what I want, he'll do it on the trial field too. He don't know it's a trial field...lol He'll just think we doin' our thing "again".
When I bring him to the Tractor Supply, I'll down him and walk around the aisle to see if he stays put. If he did I'll return the way I left, if he breaks I pop up behind him. His long downs are up to 5 minutes and slowly going to get longer. I want to return before he breaks. The poeple in the store must think I'm nuts. Watching me sneek around the aisle...lol

Never bothered me in the least what people thought of me training dogs in the public eye. If anything it brings to their attention the need to have all dogs atleast OB trained for their safety. Its a very positive example on how some folks care for their companions, good job. Von
